The Big Hair Assembly Film Competition – Terms and Conditions of Entry.
Who can enter:
An individual contestant needs to have natural Afro, mixed Afro, curly or kinky hair from African descent. A group entry can be up to four people or there can be a whole school entry with any number of people. All entries must have at least one individual with natural Afro textured hair. The other participants can have any hair type.
UK Entrants must be resident in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man from the entry date May 25th 2021 and will be entitled to be a UK Winner. There will be a minimum of three UK Winners and up to a maximum of five UK Winners, Teams or Schools.
International entrants can be based in any country. If the video is in another language, then it must include English subtitles. There will be a minimum of one International Winner, Team or School or up to a maximum of three International Winners, Teams or Schools.
Contestants minimum age is 10 years old on May 28th 2021 and no older than 18 years old on September 15th 2021. The age categories are 10-12 years, 13-15 years and 16-18 years. The judging will be from the whole cohort of contestants and the final six winners/winner groups, may be chosen from any of the age categories and any country. Applications from entrants under 18; must be filled out by a parent, legal guardian or Teacher with parental permissions for the applicants. Contact details of parents, legal guardians or Teachers must be provided on the sign up form for anyone under the age of 18 years old. Failure to provide consent or to have full parental permission will result in disqualification.
Contestants must submit one photo (head and shoulders) and a 2 minute video clip entry via the Showworks platform. The film can be in any expression e.g. short film, news report, drama, poetry, animation or any performance etc but must not include any copyrighted external material or music. However it can include the applicants original music. The film must clearly answer these essential competition questions below:
While filming, all entrants should follow the appropriate government and health advice relating to coronavirus restrictions in their own country.

Participation in the competition and prize will be subject to safeguarding checks. Contestants or parents/guardians on their behalf, agree their information can be shared with the WAD Team, independent judge and ‘Judging Panel’ and external companies used to promote or publicise the BHA/WAD and related activities.
Each contestant/group may only make one entry to the competition. Schools can make multiple entries made up of individuals and groups. Entrants must not be a friend or close relation to World Afro Day Directors, volunteers or anyone else professionally connected with the competition. Each contestant agrees that they will not share their competition entry film publicly, before September 16th 2021, without written permission from the WAD Directors. Entrants acknowledge that any violation of this provision may lead to disqualification to be decided at the WAD Directors’ absolute discretion.
Entrants must be available for all of the following: to be contacted by phone or email, after the date on which they enter the Competition and before the closing date given below. Contestants will be informed via the Showworks platform or phone and email, whether they have reached the semi-final between July 23 – Aug 1st 2021. Winners will be informed by phone or email by Friday August 15th 2021. Winners must record a winners thank you speech, if they cannot appear live at The Big Hair Assembly on 15 September 2021. UK Winners must be available for media appearances on September 15th, The Big Hair Assembly and World Afro Day, between 7-8am and 4-8pm. Any school time appearances are subject to School Leadership and parental approval. Winners will be notified of school appearance requests by the WAD Team/Organisers.
All contestants and supporters must let World Afro Day organisers know if they have ever been convicted of a crime, are the subject of ongoing criminal proceedings or investigations or have any County Court Judgments against them. The Organiser is entitled to exercise its sole discretion as to whether certain convictions and/or investigations may invalidate the contestant’s application or result in the termination of your participation in the Competition.

Winner selection & contact:
Each stage of the competition, entries will be judged by the World Afro Day Team or the judging panel, as applicable, the judging will include at least one(1) independent judge as well as (the “Judging Panel”). Entries will be judged on the following selection criteria:

First Round
The WAD production team will watch and start the shortlisting of all valid entries from May 28th – July 23rd 2021. Contestants must have followed our terms & conditions and research checks will be done to see who is eligible for the next round.
Second Round
The WAD Team will select a shortlist of 20 entries for the semi-final stage, based on the judging criteria. This list will be completed no earlier than July 23th 2021. Contestants are told that they are in the top twenty semi-finalists via the ShowWorks platform/phone call and email, between July 23 – Aug 1st 2021.
Third round
The 20 semi finalist entries are securely viewed online by the “Judging Panel.” The judge’s will review entries between July 24 – 1st August. They will review the clips against the judging criteria and will pick their A and B candidates. They will also give them a score out of 10, 10 being the highest and 1 the lowest. The entries with the most As, will become the Winners. If there are too many names, then it reverts to the highest scores. If there are candidates with the same scores, then Head Judge, Celai West, has the final say. This process will determine the Six Winners/Teams or Schools.
Fourth Round
Between August 1st to 9th, the Six Winners/Teams or Schools will be contacted via the ShowWorks platform or phone and email. They will be required to keep their win confidential until after it is officially released by the WAD organisers on World Afro Day September 15th. Unsuccessful semi-finalists are told by phone or email. They must keep the outcome confidential until after the official winner announcement on World Afro Day September 15th.
Stage Five – Winners, Big Hair Assembly and World Afro Day 15th September
WAD Production Team, BHA Hosts or Judges publicly reveal the winners at the Big Hair Assembly on World Afro Day 15 September 2021
UK Winners participating in the BHA with their schools must also be available for press/media interviews between 7-8am and 4-8pm.
UK Winners not attending the BHA with their schools must still be available for press/media interviews between 7-8am and 4-8pm.
International Winners attending the BHA with their schools must also be available for press/media interviews on September 15th
International Winners not attending the BHA with their schools must still be available for press/media interviews on September 15th or closest to this date if in a non compatible time zone.
15th September everyone, will promote and reshare ONLY WAD social content.
16th September everyone, can promote their own content and WAD content across their personal socials channels
Organisers reserve the right to change details of the competition. All arrangements are subject to UK government guidelines and Public Health England advice regarding coronavirus restrictions. All entrants should follow the appropriate government and health advice relating to coronavirus in their own country.
